I feel so guilty for having an affair - then my wife died from cancer

DEAR DEIDRE: I LEFT my wife for another woman, who then stayed with her husband.

Now my wife has passed away and I feel so bad.

My lover was my manager at work. I’m a man of 52 and she is 50.

We’ve been continuing our affair for more than ten years but my lover is still with her husband.

My wife was 53 when I left her and we soon became estranged.

I also lost touch with my daughters.

Then my eldest daughter contacted me before Christmas to tell me that her mother was dying of breast cancer.

I went to the hospital and we were with her at the end.

I told her I loved her but I feel so dreadful for having left her as I did.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m sorry for your loss.

You can’t change what’s happened but some bereavement counselling will help you.

Contact Sue Ryder (sueryder.org, 0808 164 4572) which offers six weeks of free counselling.

Now your daughter has made contact, it’s a good opportunity to try and resurrect your relationship if you can.

The charity Families Need Fathers (fnf.org.uk/ 0300 300 363) will be able to help.
