The UK is set to see fine weather over the bank holiday weekend, but a weak frontal system in the north is set to cause slightly unsettled conditions, meaning Britain won't be completely free of cloud and rain.

ITV Weather forecaster, Becky Mantin, has said that the bank holiday weekend is set to be mostly dry and fairly warm in some areas, with highs of 23C in the southwest.

Forecasting today’s weather, she said: “There is a weak frontal system in the far north, which runs into a dominating area of high pressure, leading to some cloud and a few spots of rain.”

By the middle of the afternoon, conditions will be better, with highs of 23C in Cardiff, however coastal areas will be breezy.

Becky said that on Sunday, the weak frontal system is set to travel down the North Sea coast, and that some cloud is to be expected, especially in Scotland. The southwest of England will see the warmest temperatures.

However, the weak frontal system is expected to move away at the start of next week, leading to much better conditions, as temperatures get warmer and sunshine is expected.

According to the Met Office, temperatures will rise to a peak next week as a ‘mini heatwave’ is forecasted for the start of June.

Met Office data suggests the high temperatures will be above average for the time of year, which could rise to around 27C in some areas.

UK weather forecast:

Today:

A band of cloud and increasingly patchy rain will move southeast across Scotland and Northern Ireland, with brighter skies following. England and Wales will remain dry with plenty of warm sunshine.

Tonight:

Clear spells will develop for much of the UK, but some patchy cloud will linger in northern parts of England and Wales. It will be cloudier in the north-west, with light rain in northern Scotland.
