Tina Turner urged fans to 'check themselves' for symptoms after missing signs

Tina Turner issued a warning to her fans shortly before her sad passing earlier this week.

The music legend died peacefully in her sleep at her home in Switzerland, and despite the news coming as a shock to people around the world, the singer had been struggling with her health in private for some time.

Tina's family confirmed that the 83-year-old has suffered a long battle with illness and had reportedly survived a stroke as well as kidney disease and other illnesses, including intestinal cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2016.

The music legend was said to have died peacefully in her sleep at her home near Zurich in Switzerland. Despite the news coming as a shock to people across the globe, the singer had been quietly struggling with her health for quite some time.

In March, Tina took to social media to tell her fans to "look after themselves" and to listen to their bodies as she raised awareness of kidney failure on International World Kidney Day.

She wrote: "My kidneys are victims of my not realising that my high blood pressure should have been treated with conventional medicine.

"I have put myself in great danger by refusing to face the reality that I need daily, lifelong therapy with medication. For far too long I believed that my body was an untouchable and indestructible bastion," Tina added before linking to a blog post on showyourkidneyslove.com where she later detailed the symptoms she experienced and ignored.

As a result, her kidneys began to fail prior to her 2016 cancer diagnosis.

She explained that her kidney issues were caused by high blood pressure which she failed to treat despite knowing about the health concern.

Tina's high blood pressure required daily medication which she refused to implement into her routine at the time and had considered her body to be "an invulnerable and indestructible bastion".

"I kept feeling nauseous and dizzy, forgot things, and was scared a lot," she said of her developing symptoms which she initially blamed on the medication, before realising that it was her kidney's entering their final stage.

Tina's kidneys had reached an irreversible stage as kidney function reached an all time low due to her lack of consistency in taking the vital medication.

Tina required nine months of dialysis before undergoing a kidney transplant in 2017.
