Lewis Capaldi says 'sorry' to Glastonbury crowd after struggling to complete set

Lewis Capaldi's Glastonbury set got emotional earlier today, with the Scottish singer struggling to finish his performance.

The Before You Go hitmaker took to the stage at Worthy Farm this afternoon after a few weeks off work, cancelling a string of gigs at the start of this month in order to be fit enough to perform at the festival this weekend.

Addressing his break to the Glastonbury crowd today, Lewis revealed he plans to take more time off in the future, as he got emotional.

He told the crowd: “I recently took three weeks off just because I’ve been none stop the past year and I wanted to take a wee break from my head for my mental health.

“I wanted to come back and do Glastonbury because it’s obviously so incredible so I just want to thank you all for coming out. I was scared but you’ve really made me feel at ease so thank you very much for that.”

The award-winning singer added: “I feel like I’ll be taking another wee break over the next couple of weeks so you probably won’t see much of me for the rest of the year maybe even. But when I do come back, when I do see you, I hope you’re all still up for watching.”

Writing on social media at the start of this month, the Someone You Loved singer told his fans: "Hi everyone, hope you're well. This is a really difficult message and one that hurts me a lot to have to type.

"But I'm really sorry to say that I'm going to have to cancel all commitments from now until I play Glastonbury on June 24th.

"It's been such an incredible time leading into this new album, and seeing all of the support from everyone has been beyond anything I could have ever dreamed of."

After delighting the crowd at Worthy Farm with a rendition of his song Bruises earlier today, Lewis admitted he was starting to lose his voice – but that he was going to power through to the end of his slot.

He told the crowd: “I’m going to be honest everybody but I’m starting to lose my voice up here, but we’re going to keep going and we’re going to go until the end. I just need you all to sing with me as loud as you can if that’s okay?”

The star was performing on the Pyramid Stage on Saturday evening ahead of sets by Lizzo and Guns N' Roses.

He started his set in high spirits as he joked about bringing Ed Sheeran on stage with him.

However, as the hour went by, the popular singer began to struggle with his voice before explaining the issue to fans.

"We’re gonna play two more songs if that’s okay, even if I can’t sing properly," he told the audience.

"I’m really sorry before I go any further. You’ve all come out and I’m really apologising. My voice is packing in."
