THE mystery of Annie Borjesson's death is being explored in a new BBC documentary.

Annie, from Sweden, died in 2005, but her passing has sparked many questions in the years since, leading internet sleuths to come up with a number of conspiracy theories to try and solve what happened to her.

Who is Annie Borjesson?

Annie, from the town of Tibro in western Sweden, was just 30 when she died.

She had been living and working in Edinburgh after falling in love with Scotland during a brief trip.

On December 4, 2005, she was found dead under a sea wall on Prestwick Beach.

What happened to Annie Borjesson?

A police inquiry found that Annie had drowned and her death was deemed suicide.

Her family, however, believe she may have been murdered - and there are still a number of unanswered questions surrounding her death.

Annie was due to fly home to Sweden for Christmas on the day she died, and close friends said she had been in good spirits.

The day before, she called her hairdresser in Sweden and made an appointment for the following week.

She also paid the next month's rent on her Edinburgh flat.

A Swedish mortician alerted Annie's family to bruises on her body when she was taken back to Sweden, suggesting she may have been strangled.

These bruises, however, weren't mentioned in the autopsy.

Scottish police allegedly still refuse to allow photos taken at that autopsy to be released.

The BBC has released a new four-part series on the case called Body On The Beach, made by Glasgow-based production company Rogan Scotland.

A description of the show reads: "[Annie's death was] immediately labelled as suicide by authorities [but] numerous question marks now exist over that verdict.

"Investigating the mysterious circumstances leading up to and following her death, the series will open up this cold case, piecing together information in the public domain and turning up new evidence."

The series is fronted by journalist Hazel Martin, whose grandmother lived near Prestwick beach.

In Body On The Beach, several of the conspiracy theories that people, who are perplexed by the death of Annie, have come up with are explored.

They even include a theory that she was killed by the CIA in a case of mistaken identity.

Hazel also speaks to friends of Annie who shed more light on events that occurred in the lead up to her death.

One friend, Maria Jansson, reveals Annie had seemed anxious, and was worried someone was listening to her mobile calls.

She was also concerned unknown people were tracing what she wrote on her computer, according to Jansson.

CCTV footage taken of Annie just before she died shows her arriving at the airport and then walking out towards the car park, before returning minutes later.

Her family and friends believe she looks distressed in a frame taken from this footage.

Annie also told friends about a rugby player she'd met in a nightclub.

He told her he was international rugby player Martin Leslie, but the real Martin was on the other side of the world.

Annie told her friends that when she went to meet this man, who has never been tracked down, he'd given her a look that "chilled" her.

After she died, Annie's mother, Guje Borjesson, requested her late daughter's phone records.

She was told there were no calls on record in the four days before Annie's death - even though her mother had spoken to her on the phone.

Documents that were part of a year-long investigation into Annie's death were released in 2020.

The investigation was carried out between the Swedish foreign ministry and Scottish authorities, however a Sky News podcast - titled What happened To Annie - revealed that the files were heavily redacted.

According to the podcast, Annie's death is considered "classified as secret" by the Swedish foreign ministry.

The information is redacted in Scotland because it "concerns Sweden's relations with a foreign state and a foreign authority".

All episodes of Body On The Beach: What Happened To Annie? are available on BBC iPlayer.

Presenter Hazel says the series is "not just about entertaining and educating, but also reminding people that Annie was a person who had friends and family who adored her".

She added: "It would be nice to have a conclusion for them."
