THE author of Trainspotting has blasted wokery and says left wingers are trying to control everything.

It shocked audiences with its mix of sex, drugs and violence, but Welsh believes a drive towards banning anything possibly upsetting risks turning us into robots.

The Scot, 64, said: “We have to be human beings, we have to have all these experiences, we have to learn.

“We can’t expect other people to tiptoe around us in case we say something, or they get exposed to something that’s going to hurt.

“The reason we grow is because we feel pain. We have to feel pain or we’ll become AI robots.”

Welsh, whose novel about Edinburgh junkies was published 30 years ago, has been attacked by trans activists after he supported JK Rowling’s defence of women-only spaces.

The lifelong socialist, whose thriller series Crime returns on ITV on Saturday, was branded a fascist.

In the new edition of Radio Times, he laughed at the idea and said: “The people who purport to be on the left, you always ask them, ‘What’s your end game, what do you actually want to see?’.

“And what they want to see is them in control of everybody else.”
