PARTS of the wreckage of the Titanic tourist submarine have been brought to shore, after it was confirmed that the previously-missing vessel had imploded.

The submarine, called Titan, had set out to explore the ruins of the Titanic at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean on June 18, 2023, but never returned.

What happened to the Titanic tourist submarine?

On June 18, 2023, a submersible was sent out by OceanGate Expeditions to explore the iconic Titanic wreckage.

By June 19, OceanGate's submarine had not returned, prompting a search by the Coast Guard for the missing vessel.

Titan is understood to have lost contact with its mothership above water, called the Polar Prince, just one hour and 45 minutes into the expedition.

After days of searching, the Coast Guard announced the deaths of all five passengers onboard on June 22, confirming a "catastrophic implosion" had taken place.

It was reported the submersible suffered an instant and intense pressure in the North Atlantic's deep waters.

Experts had previously cautioned this may occur due to the intense pressure at extreme depths and further warned the Titan's hull could implode.

The Titan was designed by a team of Nasa engineers but was reportedly steered by a reinforced PlayStation controller and had no GPS system.

After five days of searching, "major pieces" of the Titan were found near the Titanic wreck.

How many people lost their lives?

Five people tragically lost their lives after embarking on the Titanic tourist submarine expedition.

The five people who were on board were French submersible pilot Paul-Henry Nargeolet, chief executive and founder of OceanGate Expeditions, Stockton Rush, Pakistani millionaire Shahzada Dawood and his son Sulaiman, and UK businessman Hamish Harding.

Where is the Titanic submersible debris?

Debris from the submarine has been unloaded at the Horizon Arctic ship in St Johns, Newfoundland, Canada.

About ten pieces were taken off the ship - including the porthole and a large panel.

A deep-sea robot sub dropped onto the seabed by Horizon Arctic found the debris.

The US Coast Guard confirmed that suspected human remains have been recovered from the wreckage.

A spokesperson for the Coast Guard said: "United States medical professionals will conduct a formal analysis of presumed human remains that have been carefully recovered within the wreckage at the site of the incident."

Captain Jason Neubauer, chair of the Marine Board of Investigation (MBI), added: "The evidence will provide investigators from several international jurisdictions with critical insights into the cause of this tragedy.

"There is still a substantial amount of work to be done to understand the factors that led to the catastrophic loss of the TITAN and help ensure a similar tragedy does not occur again."

Why did the Titanic sink?

The RMS Titanic was built in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and designed by shipbuilder, William Pirrie.

The ship, the largest ocean liner ever built at the time, departed Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912.

It was set to make its way to New York City but struck an iceberg and sank into the Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles south of Newfoundland.

Nearly 1,500 out of the 2,200 passengers and crew went down with the ship or froze to death due to the tragedy.
