A BRITISH tourist has reportedly drowned at his Algarve hotel pool.

The hotel where the incident involving the 27-year-old holidaymaker occurred has been named locally as the Paraiso Hotel in the popular resort of Albufeira, Portugal.

The alarm was sounded around 2pm today.

Respected Portuguese daily Correio da Manha said the unnamed man was found in the water in “cardiac arrest.”

Unsuccessful attempts were made to revive him and he was declared dead at the scene.

Firefighters responded to emergency calls as well as police and paramedics.

The dead man, who has not been named, is believed to have been on holiday with his family.

A police investigation was underway this afternoon.

Police will report their findings to a local court which will also await the results of the autopsy.

Firefighters based in Albufeira confirmed they had been called to the hotel.

A source confirmed the dead man was a British tourist, although he went on to describe him as a 30-year-old and not a 27-year-old as initial local reports claimed.

The source said: “The emergency calls that came in described the victim as being in cardiac arrest.

“When the first emergency responders reached the hotel, lifeguards had already got the man out of the water and were trying to revive him.

“The responders took over but without success.

“A doctor confirmed him dead at the scene.”

It was not immediately clear what had caused the tragedy.

Hotel staff declined to comment this afternoon, saying they weren’t in a position to offer any information.

Police could not be reached for comment.

Investigators are expected to speak to witnesses while they await the results of a postmortem.

Hotel Paraiso describes itself online as a four-star tourist development in the centre of Albufeira, one of the most popular British resorts on the Algarve.

It comprises nearly 400 apartments on eight guest floors. Facilities include an outdoor and indoor swimming pool as well as a jacuzzi, mini golf and gym.
