Shelvey, 31, only joined Steve Cooper’s side in January from Newcastle.

But he was left out of the squad for Forest’s final seven games of the season following a row about being left on the bench for the game against Liverpool.

While Forest are looking to move players on after their massive spree last year, Sheffield United are looking for recruits as they prepare for their return to the Premier League.

Blades boss Paul Heckinbottom is working with a restricted budget.

Shelvey could be available for a relatively small fee, despite having two years left on his deal at the City Ground.

The ex-England international is thought to be on about £70,000 per week at Forest, who would be glad to remove that burden from their wage bill.

Since joining Forest, Shelvey has only appeared in eight games.

He has an plethora of Premier League experience which could be invaluable to Heckingbottom's newly-promoted side.
