A father-of-four who is obsessed with erotica has converted his home office into a sex museum to display the 10,000 items he’s collected. Among his hoards of items, which he estimates are worth over $44,000, he has countless vintage sex toys, sex dolls, and pornographic films.

The dad now hopes to open the museum for the public to enjoy as he believes that the history of sex should be celebrated. Andras Bagoly, 56, from Vancouver, Canada, became first became obsessed with all things erotica when he was 11 years old, after stealing his father’s peep show keyring.

Since then he has traveled the world buying and picking up items that are steeped in the history of the world of sex and show how the industry and attitudes towards erotica have changed over the years. Discussing his unusual hobby of collecting X-rated memorabilia, he said: “I stole the keyring, which had a naked lady on it, from his dresser drawer when he wasn’t home, and I still have it.

“My parents made me start working at a young age to teach me good work ethic values so I worked in a corner store and I used to stock the shelves. I had access to all the adult magazines at the back of the shop, and I think the store owner would just look the other way.

“There I was, flipping through all the adult magazines, and I still have my very first Playboy from 1980.” Andras said his fascination grew over time: “My sister used to sell adult novelties in the early Eighties when I was 12 or 13, and I would take a few things out of her kit, like a vibrator – I was obsessed with all things erotica.

“At age 15 or 16 I was begging to borrow videotapes from my boss, who we all suspected was a swinging bachelor. I just had such a fascination with nudity and sex. I was very curious, which continued when I was older – on my 18th birthday I met the porn star Marilyn Chambers.”

Andras, who is known online as The Sex Collector, is supported in his quest by his devoted wife Brigitta, 55, often helping him research new finds, and his four sons have “grown up” around his collection.

Andras thinks his sons, whom he does not wish to name, find the collection “interesting” and “aren’t ashamed” of it, and believes his “more open approach” to talking about sex and pornography has made them “incredible gentlemen who know how to treat women with respect”.

In amongst the thousands of erotic items Andras owns, his favourite is a tortoiseshell dildo sex toy set from 1700s Japan but what he really wants is a latex sex doll, which is no longer made. Andras revealed: “The walls of my museum are covered in erotica and I have things in light-up storage – I want it to look as professional as possible.

“I have hundreds and hundreds of vintage sex toys, sex dolls, and pornographic movies, as well as erotic photos and books, erotic folk art, erotic paintings, erotic oddities – you name it and I have it. I think the history of sex should be celebrated.”

Andras, a props master in the film and television industry, became fascinated with the history of sex and stories behind antique vibrators and funny medical tools. In 2007, Andras and his wife visited New York’s Museum of Sex and he was inspired to collect even more sexual objects.

He said: “I realised that everything in there was extremely beautiful and very rare, and I think that’s where the light bulb went on and I said I need to have my own museum. I wanted even more stuff, so I started looking on Craigslist or on Etsy or Facebook Marketplace, and then eventually, in 2014, I turned my office in our home into a curiosity shop or museum to display my collection.

“At that point, I had over 250 antique vibrators, and one day my nephew asked why I had so many dildos. I would get so angry and be like ‘These are not dildos’ – then it dawned on me, why don’t I have any dildos? So I branched out and turned to antique erotica – now, one of my favourite pieces I own is a tortoiseshell dildo sex toy set from 1700s Japan.”

He added: “I think in the future I’d really like a latex sex doll – it was originally latex and then they went to the PVC vinyl, which was cheaper, easier to deal with. So, I’ve been hunting and searching for a latex sex doll for at least a good eight years now, and I cannot find one at all. There are men that have them and they will not give them up, and they just don’t make them anymore.”

Looking back on his 40-year collection, Andras said: “It’s amazing how much I own, and how amazing my wife and sons have been about it. I think my collection made me have a more open approach to talking about sex and pornography with my kids – I told them from a young age how babies were made and wanted to make them feel as comfortable as possible.

“Of course, they don’t like talking about that side of their lives with their parents – that’s always going to be a bit awkward – but I think now they are incredible gentlemen who know how to treat women with respect. I’m so proud of them all. I’d love to open an exhibit or a cocktail bar that has a museum attached to it with my collection. That’s my dream.”
