ENGLAND batter Alex Hales has retired from international cricket.

The 34-year-old made 156 appearances for England across three formats, scoring 5,066 runs.

He said: "It’s been a privilege to pull on the England shirt as many times as I have, across all formats.

"So now to be able to reflect on that journey, the career I’ve had on the international stage and the moments I have been fortunate enough to be a part of, is really satisfying.

"There are so many memories that I have made both on and off the pitch, but I look back particularly to those two One-Day International World Record scores at Trent Bridge, and being able to reach three figures in both of those games on my home ground was really special.

"And, clearly, to come away from my last tournament with England as a T20 World Cup winner is the perfect finish."

Hales was a controversial star, and missed England's victory in the 2019 World Cup with a drugs ban.

The explosive opener as slapped with a 21-day ban for recreational drug use.

Hales also received a fine and suspension following his part in the infamous nightclub brawl involving Ben Stokes in September 2017.

Hales is the third England cricket star to retire this week.

His friend and former Nottinghamshire teammate Stuart Broad played his final match on Monday.

The 37-year-old took the winning wicket as England claimed the fifth Ashes Test to draw the series with Australia.

Moeen Ali also retired from the sport following the conclusion of The Ashes.

Hales scored 2,074 runs in 75 T20Is and 2,419 in 70 ODIs for England between 2011 and 2022.

His final appearance in an England shirt came in the T20 World Cup final against Pakistan in November.

The historic win saw England become the first country to hold the 20-over and 50-over World Cups at the same time.
