A woman claims to have discovered a 'very rare' diamond in her garden after a heavy rainfall brought it to the surface. The woman, from Virginia, America, explained how she came across the diamond by chance after noticing something shiny in her mum's flowerbeds.

She says she has been collecting gemstones and "pretty rocks" for a number of years - but never expected to find an actual diamond, especially in her back garden. Sharing her discovery on Reddit, user Butterfly_Heaven101 wrote: "I found a very rare diamond. Only four other diamonds have been found in state history. The last diamond was found over 100 years ago in 1913."

She added: "It was slightly buried but sticking out of the ground. Very shiny, I find it hard to miss. My mum always said I had eagle eyes.

"There was no dirt sticking to it either when I pulled it out of the ground. This was a day after a good rain."

The woman sought out online experts to confirm her find and conducted her own tests on the shiny rock to see whether it was the real deal.

She is now planning to take it to a jewellers to determine its valuable carat weight.

The woman added: "Scratch test - I deeply scratched topaz (8) but topaz couldn't scratch it back. This is at least a 9 in hardness.

"UV light test- It glows blue (sapphires typically don't produce fluorescence and if it did the colour would be pink/red).

"Diamond tester - It beeped and went off (diamond positive)."

After being asked whether she's going to keep or sell it, she shared her intention to embed the diamond in an engagement ring.

She added: "I would love to have it cut and faceted for a future engagement ring, but at the same time, maybe just put it on a ring and leave it natural."

While most users congratulated her on her remarkable find, others joked about everybody in Virginia suddenly digging up their gardens in hope of finding a diamond.

One user said: "Virginians are rushing to buy metal detectors."

Another user added: "Don't make me run out in my yard to go look for diamonds now."

A third user said: "This does give me some incentive to garden more this spring."
