There is always a risk when it comes to going under the knife, and celebrity doctor Terry Dubrow has issued a stark warning in the aftermath of Lisa Marie Presley 's death at the age of 54.
The only child of rock 'n' roll icon Elvis Presley died in January and it has since been ruled that her passing was due to a bowel obstruction that stemmed from a weight loss procedure. The Los Angeles County Coroner's report earlier this month ruled the obstruction had "developed after bariatric surgery years ago".
Now, Dr Dubrow of Botched fame has opened up on the risks of getting bariatric surgery. The term is an umbrella phrase that covers weight loss surgeries including a gastric sleeve, gastric bypass and adjustable band, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.
Speaking to TMZ, the doctor said: "I have read Lisa Marie's autopsy report. She had the most advanced kind. They made a new connection between her stomach and her intestines, and the most common complication when you go inside the abdomen and do that kind of surgery is that scar tissue forms."
He went on: "Occasionally, any time in the future when you've had this type of bypass bariatric surgery, those adhesions can block parts of the small intestine, called a small bowel obstruction."
Muhammad Ali was stood up by Elvis who turned up 'high or drunk' at 4am to watch him spar before fightAnd he added that if this continues, the intestines can "die" because of strangulation. He said: "What's really scary is 915 centimetres, which means 30 feet of her small intestines had died before she made it to the hospital."
News of Lisa Marie's secret surgery shocked some of her closest friends, with one saying the singer had never been dangerously obese and so never in need of bariatric surgery.
"When did you ever see Lisa look as if she needed bariatric surgery? She was not big at all. I don’t know what kind of doctor would perform this surgery on her," a source hit out following the news.
While they didn't know about her bariatric surgery, the source said friends were aware of Lisa Marie having "regular tweaks" such as Botox and other injectables, as well as minor cosmetic procedures.
Lisa Marie's last public appearance was at the Golden Globe Awards, just two days before her death, with fans concerned at the time for her wellbeing.
