Gangsters ‘call for ceasefire’ after deadly Christmas Eve pub shootingThe entire village, said to have inspired Sir Walter Scott’s classic novel Ivanhoe, was placed in lockdown after the tragedy in a secluded corner of the community.
Officers were called to the scene at around 8pm amid reports of a "dispute" taking place inside the home.
They then tragically discovered the woman's lifeless body.
Residents said what happened was still a mystery and no one knew if the two people involved were a couple or whether they were local.
It is understood they had only recently moved in after the cottages were upgraded and let to new tenants.
Three terraced houses remained inside the police cordon until yesterday.
Locals claimed all three cottages were rented properties which changed hands regularly
Nicky Kenyon, the only resident of the row of terraced homes living outside the cordon, said: “It is a leafy village which has been my family home.
“I was out with the dogs when it happened. We have not got a clue who the victim was. I think those are all rented properties.
“It was all cordoned off on Saturday night - the entire village. There was nothing in the village apart from police cars.

He added: “There have been police outside the house ever since and forensics have been here too.”
Another local woman, who has lived in the village all her life, said: “I have absolutely no idea what happened and I only live around the corner. I did not see anything.
“No one knows who it was. It is just a very sad story.
"All we know is there has been a stabbing in the area and a lady’s life taken."
She continued: “We heard police were called to a property. The wine bar is around the corner so you would not see anything from there. It is very scary.
"It happened on Saturday at 8 o clock. We had been in a meal in town. We got to the corner and saw all the police cars.
“It was totally taped off and we did not hang around because we wanted to get away.
"I later heard the lady who died was about the same age as me which is really scary.”
A local woman pensioner added: “It is frightening. It is crazy.
“It is normally so quiet. Even when they come out the pub at night there is no noise. It is terrible.
"It is something you don’t expect in the village. I can’t believe it.
Dog walker and retired teacher Richard Mint, who has lived in the village for years, said: “It is a fabulous area and a very popular place to live.
"This is the first bit of excitement we have had around here for years.
