An "idiot" Mercedes driver got their vehicle stuck in deep wet sand on a beach and left it stranded for hours.

The silver SUV was eventually towed away by a tractor after it became wedged in the sand on Towan Beach in Newquay, Cornwall on Wednesday.

A dog walker who saw the motor as early as 5am posted a photograph of online, writing: "Looks like some halfwit visiting Newquay mistook the beach for free parking."

A later image - again shared on social media - shows the huge red tractor haul the car off the beach, popular with tourists and swimmers.

Locals expressed their anger at another driver chancing their luck on the sand, reports Cornwall Live.

"I can't get my head around it.....No seriously I can't," one local said on Facebook. Another posted: "What makes people look at a beach and think you know what, I'll drive my car on there?"

A third shared: "More money than sense. You buy a Chelsea tractor with 4WD and think that means it really will go anywhere. Only it won't." Another summed up the thoughts of many Cornwall residents, particularly this time of the year, as they commented: "Idiot season is here."

One of the busiest beaches in Cornwall, Towan Beach is popular with families and tourists. There's parking in Newquay town centre just a few minutes away from the beach. There are also a few parking spots on the residential streets nearby. So it remains unclear exactly how and when the Mercedes driver ended up on the sand, and who the culprit is.
