Benjamin Pavard delighted Manchester United fans on Monday by commenting on Raphael Varane's winner against Wolves - just hours after agreeing to join the Red Devils.

Varane scored the vital goal in United's unconvincing 1-0 victory, as they started their Premier League campaign off with a win. In the background, manager Erik ten Hag and the club's recruitment team are busy attempting to make a strong end to the summer transfer window, with Pavard among those who could sign before deadline day on September 1.

The Bayern Munich defender is reportedly urging his current club to sell him after reaching a verbal agreement to join United, having entered the final year of his contract. Pavard, 27, would act as a replacement for the likely outgoing Harry Maguire, whose £30million transfer to West Ham remains on the cards, despite a delay caused by discussions over the Red Devils centre-back's hefty pay-off.

Commenting on former France international team-mate Varane's post, Pavard left two fire emojis and got supporters excited. "Agent Varane" was a widespread response in the replies, while others urged the 27-year-old to complete a transfer and some even went as far as to welcome him to United.

Pavard has spent the past four years in Munich, having won the World Cup with France in 2018. Comfortable playing as either a centre-back or right-back, the Bayern want-away would be a handy option for Red Devils boss Ten Hag should the two clubs strike a transfer deal.

It's been claimed that Bayern would demand at least €30m(£25.8m) in order to sell Pavard, who played 45 minutes of Saturday's humiliating 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in the German Super Cup at their home stadium. Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel took him off at half-time, despite being a regular under the German tactician following his appointment in March.

That only added to suggestions that Pavard's time is up in Bavaria, with the Frenchman seemingly on course to link up with Varane at Old Trafford. Although he wouldn't be guaranteed a starting place, Pavard would hope to be part of more solid performances than the one which United put in against Wolves.

Allowing their opponents 23 shots - the most of any away side at Old Trafford since 2005 - Varane's 76th-minute header proved to be the difference. Wolves should've had a penalty in the dying embers of added time when Red Devils goalkeeper Andre Onana clattered into striker Sasa Kalajdzic, but somehow VAR didn't instruct on-field referee Simon Hooper to review his original decision.
