Countryfile Anita Rani says she is feeling ‘liberated’ after chopping short her hair - and after reports emerged she has split from her husband.

The 45-year-old nature expert - who was also a contestant on star-studded BBC competition Strictly Come Dancing back in 2015 - was married to businessman Bhupinder Rehal in 2009. However, it was revealed on Tuesday that the relationship had come to an end after 14 years.

Taking to Instagram on Wednesday, Anita revealed she had been to see her favourite hairdresser and was ready for the next chapter of her life - with a fresh new look. The BBC star had her hair freshly trimmed - giving her an instant confidence boost. Sharing a snap of herself alongside salon artist Sam Varley, Anita wrote: “Sometimes in life all you need is a bloody good chop. I was 18 when I was finally allowed to cut my long bum length hair and a delightful ‘Aunty’ told me I’d lost my beauty.

“Well I discovered my liberation. Short haired aunties were always so glam to me, free spirited, independent, going against ‘beauty’ standards, a little bit rock n roll. And every time I get it trimmed I feel a kick of rebellion and a sense of freedom. Defining my own beauty standards. Sticking the finger up to what’s expected. Let’s go brothers and sisters!”

Anita alluded to her new future as a single woman as she hinted the winds of change are in the air for many. She wrote: “New school term, new pencil case and a new hair cut… I LOVE SA women with long flowing powerful goddess black rockstar locks, wild and untamed.”

Anita’s post chimed with many of her fans - with several writing to agree with her. One follower on Instagram reacted to write: “Looking gorgeous as ever - know exactly what you mean about those short-haired Aunties! They def rock and rolled!”

On Tuesday, news broke that Anita’s marriage had come to an end. A source told the Mirror: “It’s really sad but they’ve decided to separate. Their hectic schedules over the past couple of years have sadly meant they’ve drifted apart over time. They remain on very good terms and wish nothing but the best for one another.”

While her soon-to-be ex-husband Bhupi lives largely out of the spotlight, he is known to own his own tech company. The pair don’t have any children. Anita has previously spoken about how happy she was with her husband, after meeting at a rave in east London. But she has admitted how their three-day traditional Sikh marriage was sped up for their parents, and how in the lead-up, she experienced a real case of cold feet.

She said previously: "I just remember thinking, 'Who is all this for?' I was already 32 and I wasn't getting any younger… Of course, they were all thinking about children too - everyone apart from me, that is."
