FRENCH police are probing if the Irish fan who was allegedly gang-raped by three men at the Rugby World Cup had her drink spiked.

Investigators are currently examining CCTV as they try to trace the woman’s movements in Bordeaux after 11pm on Sunday night.

Detectives are analysing footage from bars to try and identify if a substance was placed in any of her drinks.

Officers are also seeking to identify anyone who interacted with the fan before she was attacked as she returned to her accommodation.

And they’re examining CCTV cameras close to the spot where she was found to establish if she had been followed.

One source said: “This is a French investigation and officers there are looking at all possible angles.

“Gardai are on hand to provide any assistance that might be required.
“One possibility is that she may have been drugged before being attacked as she made her way to the place where she was staying.”

At present, the woman has made a statement to French prosecutors.

The woman claims that she watched Ireland’s match against Romania on Saturday and had been socialising in a number of bars on Sunday.

It’s understood she claimed she was attacked as she made her way home.

It’s believed she was found by Welsh fans before returning to her accommodation.

Once there, the alarm was raised by neighbours.

Gardai who are based in France for the World Cup helped her file a complaint with French investigators.

The woman was also brought to hospital for treatment and her clothing has also been examined by detectives as they search for DNA clues.

Investigators also hope to interview the woman later this week.

VICTIM SUPPORT

The woman has also been supported by a group which helps victims of rape and sexual assault.

A spokesman for the gardai said: “Members of An Garda Síochána currently deployed in France for the duration of the Rugby World Cup tournament to assist Irish people visiting France are liaising with local authorities in relation to an alleged incident.

“The investigation is a matter for French police. An Garda Síochána has no further comment at this time.”

The IRFU confirmed they were “aware of the disturbing news emanating from Bordeaux regarding an incident involving an Irish supporter at the weekend”.

Rugby chiefs added: “We are shocked and extend our deepest sympathies to the victim.

“The IRFU wants all fans to have a positive experience supporting the team in France and we urge all travellers to take care and look out for each other.”
