FURY erupted when a classic car show painted white lines on a town’s “sacred” green.

Organisers marked out parking spaces for 400 motors, which residents feared wouldn’t disappear.

Councillor Mark Bamforth said ropes should have been used to separate cars exhibiting at Lytham St Annes, Lancs.

He explained: “The green’s very sacred to people who were born and bred here.

“It's a great asset for the area to have a big green open space like that looking good. If you use it, you should look after it.

“I'm passionate about the green.

“It's like the jewel in the crown.”

Other protesters backed the retired postmaster on Facebook.

One fumed: “Spoiling our green — leave it alone.”

Another wrote: “The green is becoming an extended car park.

“It’s not what the green was for.”

Blackpool Vehicle Preservation Group’s Bill Swindlehurst said: “The paint used was ­a water-soluble pitch marker.”
