Convinced Danniella Westbrook claims Russell Brand is a "target of lies" because he questions agendas and labelled the allegations against him "disgusting".

She has jumped to the defence of her friend, who she calls 'helpful, kind and funny', and suggests the fact the film star is outspoken has left him exposed to accusations. The comic has been accused of rape, sexual assault and abuse by five women between 2006 and 2013.

The allegations were made public following a joint investigation by The Times and Channel 4 ’s Dispatches and the documentary Russell Brand: In Plain Sight, which aired on TV on Saturday night. The 48-year-old denied any criminal wrongdoing and says every sexual relationship he has had has been totally consensual.

Danniella, 49, waded in and sent Russell a message after a weekend of explosive claims, telling the world he has never been anything except good to her and says she is supporting him as he battles to save his career. She took to Instagram and replied to the star's YouTube response.

"It's disgusting what's being said about you," she told him. "Never in my life have I met a more helpful, kind and funny person. Because you speak the truth and question agendas of certain things it doesn't make you a target to be lied about. Wishing you the best, we all know its lies. Sending love always mate xx".

On Friday night, Russell released a statement saying: "I've received two extremely disturbing letters or a letter and an email. One from a mainstream media TV company, one from a newspaper listing a litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks, as well as some pretty stupid stuff like community festival should be stopped, that I shouldn't be able to attack mainstream media narratives on this channel.

"But amidst this litany of astonishing rather baroque attacks, often very serious allegations that I absolutely refute. These allegations pertain to the time when I was working in the mainstream, when I was in the newspapers all the time, when I was in the movies. And as I've written about extensively in my books, I was very, very promiscuous.

"Now, during that time of promiscuity, the relationships I had were absolutely always consensual. I was always transparent about that. Then almost too transparent, and I'm being transparent about it now as well. And to see that transparency metastasized into something criminal that I absolutely deny makes me question, is there another agenda at play?"
