A BELOVED family fishmonger is closing down after nearly 60 years.

Samway's in West Bay, Dorset will be shutting its doors tomorrow, September 24.

The shop first opened 1961 and sells local fish and produce for shoppers nearby.

The family run business and is part of Samways Fish Merchants & Internation Transporters Ltd.

Charlie Samways, chief operations officer at Samways, has fond memories of the shop, according to the Dorset Echo.

When it had just begun, it was run by his mother, and during the school holidays, he would help his grandfather man the store.

He told the Dorset Echo: "We have had some fantastic years and many local customers.

"It is sad to be closing but the retail scene has changed enormously, with costs particularly in the past 24 months making it hard, particularly for fishmongers."

"We will always cherish the memories we have made and the bond we have shared with our community. Thank you for your understanding and support during this time."

Disappointed fans took to the comments to share their thoughts.

One wrote: "So sad."

Retailers have been feeling the pinch since the pandemic while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to soaring inflation.

High energy costs and a shift to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

Cants of Colchester, located on the old A134 between Colchester and Great Horkesley, will close at the end of this month.

The store was first established in 1765 and has over 250 years of experience in growing roses.

The business is still a family firm run by direct descendants of the founder.

Pub giant Wetherspoon has already closed dozens of boozers across the UK, including in Hove, Derby and London.

The chain, like many others, has been hit hard by rising costs brought on by high inflation.

While Wilko is closing 37 of its stores tomorrow (September 24) after it fell into administration on August 10.
