New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr was forced out of the game on Sunday with a right shoulder injury against the Green Bay Packers.

Carr was in immediate pain after Packers lineman Rashan Gary sacked him in the third quarter. The Saints at first listed him as questionable but ultimately ruled him out for the remainder of the contest. And he has reportedly been taken to a local hospital for additional testing after undergoing an X-ray at the stadium. Doctors fear internal injuries and want to complete a more thorough scan.

Jameis Winston, who the quarterback-starved Jets have reportedly been monitoring, stepped into the fray in place of Carr. The Saints held a sizable advantage over the Packers when Carr went down, but Jordan Love and Co. roared back in the fourth quarter to win 18-17. Winston went 10-of-16 for 101 yards in his limited action.

Winston, though, said in his post-game press conference that his first thoughts are about Carr's status. "The first thing is that I hope Derek's OK," he told reporters. "Hopefully he will be fine."

Carr has dealt with scary injuries before. In 2016, when he was a member of the Raiders, he suffered a career-altering fractured fibula that kept him out of the playoffs. Until the gruesome moment, the Raiders were enjoying their best-ever season with him under centre. He never got to see where that team could have gone if healthy.

The 32-year-old joined the Saints in the offseason hoping to find the playoff success he never managed in Oakland and Las Vegas.

Cruelly, his performance Sunday against the Packers was far above how he had looked in the first two weeks of 2023. He left the game with a 104.6 passer rating.

Carr's setback could have a knock-on effect elsewhere in the league, as other teams that were monitoring Winston may now be out of luck.

In particular, it takes a New York Jets quarterback target off the market. If the former Fresno State college football star is forced to miss any time, New Orleans would be unlikely to consider shipping out Winston, a backup who might be the first-choice at many other organisations.

During their loss to New England on Sunday, New York broke down into finger-pointing during tense sideline scenes between current signal-caller Zach Wilson and his teammates. Their need for a passer has never been greater. They've been left reeling by Aaron Rodgers' Achilles rupture in the season opener.

Wilson drew boos from Jets fans that will have his team reconsidering its commitment to him as the starter. As has been typical of his career, he struggled under pocket pressure. Top wide receiver Garrett Wilson at one point was seen expressing frustration on the sideline.
