Holidaymakers have shared their top travel-related stresses – from getting stuck in traffic en route to the airport, to flight delays or cancellations.

A poll of 2,000 Brits, who travel by air, found that three-quarters (74%) worry about leaving their passport behind at home, while 49% stress about forgetting money, or their credit cards.

And for 34%, getting through security is their biggest concern – while 27% get anxious about collecting their luggage.

Other top things they fear could go wrong while travelling include their baggage being overweight, not having enough time between connecting flights, and having to sit next to a stranger on the plane.

Thankfully, Expedia is on hand with its 2024 Air Travel Hacks Report – aiming to save travellers time and money on flights, and make air travel less stressful.

The report, compiled from billions of data points from the Airline Reporting Corporation’s (ARC) global airline sales database, features such tips as travelling on a Friday, in order to save up to 26 per cent compared to travelling on Sunday, the most expensive day.

It also emerged the sweet spot for cheap travel booking 112-132 days in advance – but buying six months ahead will be just as expensive as leaving it to the last minute, the data revealed.

Flights between 9am and 3pm are least likely to experience cancellations – and the best time to travel without delays and cancellations is January.

And flights booked on a Sunday and taken on a Friday are up to 26% cheaper than those booked on any other day, according to the report.

For over a third of anxious travellers (36%), bookstores are deemed the calmest areas of an airport – followed by Duty Free shops (32%), restaurants (31%), and even the toilets (21%), according to the OnePoll.com figures.

It also emerged that, when travelling, one in three would be willing to pay extra to choose their own seat, while 30% would part with more cash in exchange for more leg room.

And a quarter are happy to pay for a direct flight, rather than one that has a connection – while 21% will pay for lounge access.

Melanie Fish, spokeswoman for Expedia Group, said: “No way should people rather do their taxes than go on a trip, so thank goodness a lot of the things causing travel-related stress are getting better.

“Fewer flights are being cancelled, and technology is helping with tools in the Expedia app, like Price Tracking, that make the whole booking and flying journey smoother.”
