Birthdays are often associated as a celebratory occasion surrounded by your closest friends and family. While some people may fancy big celebrations and parties, others may choose to opt for low-key options and are simply content with a local takeaway and some booze.

A woman was devastated, however, when her husband and her children forgot her birthday completely. The devastated mum was left without gifts, cards, or even a birthday cake from her family to celebrate her special day.

While many people take the backfoot with their birthdays as they step up to the role as parents, there's still an underlying expectation that your family make your day special.

Taking her upset to popular forum Mumsnet, the mum admitted her sadness that her husband and her children - who are in their teenage and adult years - all forgot her birthday.

Captioning the post, the woman wrote: "My Husband and kids forgot my birthday."

In the post, the woman explained: "Feeling disappointed that my husband and teenage to adult kids forgot my birthday."

Since sharing her post on Saturday 21 January, the woman has raked in over 250 comments to date.

Well-wishers and Mumsnet users fled to the comment section to sympathise with the upset mother - and to send their own happy birthday messages.

"Oh was it today? Do you normally remind them?" One person questioned.

They went on: "I think you should treat yourself to flowers, a cake and a takeaway. And not share. Or to on a spree. Happy birthday x."

A second person wrote: "Oh my goodness that's horrible. I hope they've secretly remembered and organised a massive surprise for tonight."

Meanwhile, someone else said: "Yup, that's appalling and they need to be ashamed. Any chance of you getting out tonight with friends?"

A different user penned: "I'm sorry that happened. It's very thoughtless of them. I bet they would all complain if you ignored theirs.

"Pull them all up sharply on it. Say that you expect to be either taken out for a meal tonight or all get a nice takeaway with a large bottle of wine."
