HANDS up who has thought about forking out on an expensive gym membership this January.

Well, we’re here to tell you that you don’t need to break the bank to achieve your fitness goals for 2023 and can instead do it from the comfort of your own home, or local area.

According to Rosie Stockley, a women’s fitness specialist and founder of fitness brand MAMAWELL, you can now shape up for considerably less money – and have more of a variety too.

Rosie exclusively tells Fabulous: “The great thing about working out at home is the money you might spend on an expensive gym membership or classes can instead be used on quality equipment or great online classes.

“Remember you're paying a premium for the space and service the gym offers, and while that can be quite inspiring, many of us find we're more likely to find time to workout if we can quickly access it at home.

“So many great trainers have their own programme which will be cheaper than gym membership, plus you can access workouts free on YouTube to supplement.

“This model means you can access a couple of styles of training. For example, if you love strength training with weights and also yoga, then you can do both in your home without having to join separate expensive studios.

“The money that you save going to the gym and upgrading your gear at home  – which is only a one-off payment usually and you could even spread the cost monthly – could then be used on higher quality food to supercharge your diet.

“And not forgetting your mental health. Perhaps investing in an app that might help you with mindfulness and relaxation.”

Here, Rosie lifts the lid on seven helpful hacks, tips and tricks that you can rely on all year around to keep you feeling fit and healthy – but will save you money in the long run…

WALKING

“Check your local forums for walking groups - or make your own!

“This is a great option if you don't think you can commit to a running group but still want the social focus and the cardio aspect for getting out for a brisk walk.

“Walking is such a great way to combine mindfulness with exercise, plus it's a lovely way to see your local area and of course, it's free.”

TEA BREAK

“Do your pelvic floor exercises while waiting for the kettle to boil.

“It's so important for women to get into the habit of doing our kegels, both contracting and relaxing these muscles - to make them strong, responsive and supple.

“This is important throughout life as we age, as well as if we're going to go through childbirth and recovery.”

TIME OUT

“Lie with your legs up against the wall for 5 minutes before bed, it's hugely relaxing for the body and mind.

“The back, pelvis and legs will really feel the strain reduced and it's so easy to implement because it feels so good.”

DESK EXERCISE

“Set your alarm for 5 minutes to the hour when you're doing desk based work and use these 5 minutes to drink a big glass of water and do some very quick stretches.

“This will give you a quick break, energise and refresh you, ready for the next hour of productivity.”

SCHEDULE

“If you're working from home and are scheduling exercise, try to do it in the middle of the day, morning or afternoon rather than after work.

“A workout can provide a blast of energy and help your mindset in the day.

“Plus you're less likely to cancel if you get it done earlier, particularly if you're someone who's job gets busy in the afternoon, or you have kids to look after.

“A quick run can be the perfect thing.

DANCE, DANCE, DANCE

“Get the tunes on and have a boogie at some point every day.

“It's such a mood shifter and something we definitely don't do on the regular - but can be so quick to make us feel good – however terrible you feel you are at dancing!”

ONLINE WORKOUTS

“Try before you buy - most fitness programmes online offer a free week or so to try out - it's nice to support the people who provide the workouts you love, but it's also important to use your own money wisely and choose a programme that you can really commit to.

“My Club Mamawell has a week free for all members. Two of the most recent workouts are now free too - an energising cardio workout and a restorative stretch - so needed after all the eating, sitting, drinking over Christmas and New Year.

“They both require no equipment which makes them perfect to do anywhere.”
