Liverpool's official stance on Spurs replay as Klopp makes personal wishes clear

Jurgen Klopp wants the controversial game at Spurs last weekend to be replayed, because of the “unprecedented” situation surrounding the total failure of VAR.

But Liverpool have not yet confirmed they will make an official request to the Premier League for a rerun of the contest, which the home side won 2-1, as they study all the options open to them, following release of the official referee’s feed.

And it still seems unlikely there will be formal complaint to the authorities, with the club’s board now placing the matter in the hands of their legal advisor, Jonathan Bamber - who is the General Counsel and Director of Football Administration at Liverpool Football Club - to explore the limited options open to them.

It is uncertain whether there is even scope within the league’s regulations to demand a replay of any game, but Klopp believes it should be done because of the unique circumstances surrounding Luis Diaz’s perfectly good goal, which was not given because of “significant human error” in the VAR control room.

“It was an obvious mistake and I think there would have been solutions for it afterwards. If not, I can say immediately, I think the only outcome should be a replay.

“Probably some people don’t want me to say it, and it probably won’t happen. But I say it, not as the manager of Liverpool but much more as a football person, it is unprecedented.

“The argument against (a replay) will probably be if you open that gate then everybody will ask for it. But I think the situation is so unprecedented, the replay would be the right thing. It (has never) happened before.

“I’m 56 years old and I’m 50 years in football, and I’m absolutely used to - even if I don’t always deal well with it - wrong decisions, difficult decisions. But something like that as far as I can remember has never happened.”

Klopp was asked directly if Liverpool as a club would formally request a replay from the Premier League, and after a hushed exchange with the club’s press officer, he replied with a huge smile: “At this stage we still go through the information - sorry!”

It is understood the club, led by their General Counsel Bamber, will examine the entire process from Saturday’s game - including a careful look at the feed which details the exchange between referee Simon Hooper and the two VAR officials Darren England and Dan Cook - before deciding on the next step.

But given Liverpool have a Europa League game on Thursday evening, and then travel to Brighton for a 2pm kick off in the Premier League on Sunday, it is unlikely the time frame will allow a formal appeal to have the game replayed.

Spurs, for their part, have declined to respond to Klopp’s comments, and will allow the process to play out within the Premier League prescribed framework.
