Steven Davis has taken interim charge assisted by Ibrox old boy Alex Rae, with the pair overseeing a 2-1 loss to Aris Limassol in the Europa League in their first game in charge.

The club's hierarchy are keen on bringing in a permanent replacement to Beale and, according to the Daily Record, Gers representatives have spoken to Lampard and Muscat, with the pair making it into the final round of talks to decide who will be the man to take over.

Lampard, who is out of a job since leaving Chelsea for a second time as boss this summer, is said to have met with an Ibrox delegation in London on Wednesday evening.

While former Rangers defender Muscat reportedly held talks over a video call yesterday morning after managing his current side Yokohama Marinos in the Asian Champions League.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner is also said to have thrown his name into the hat last-minute by instructing his representatives to declare his interest in the job.

However, this reportedly came before Rangers proceeded to the final stage of their selection of those they consider top candidates for the manager's post.

Whoever takes over will inherit a playing squad with a huge point to prove to fans.

Defender Connor Goldson APOLOGISED to supporters after his side's dismal showing in Cyprus.

After the match on Thursday night, he told TNT Sports: "The fans have paid a lot of money to come this far and watch us and it’s disappointing.

“They do that for every game and for us not to win here, it’s rubbish.

“We have to apologise to them and that’s all we can do.

“We need to apologise, work harder and start winning games.

“The demands at this club are to win every single game and at the minute, we aren’t doing that.”
