“One minute it was quiet and the next there were all these flashing lights.

“There were at least six police cars in the street and ambulances.

“Kayakers were in the river looking for somebody but they found nothing.

“My first thought was kids had been playing on the riverbank and had fallen in.

“You fear the worst with the lady missing overnight.

“The water has been flowing really fast because of all the rain we’ve been having.

“It would have been absolutely freezing.

“The search helicopter was flying so low it made our windows shake.”

One shop worker told how he was ordered not to leave his business due to the activity outside.

The hunt resumed this morning with uniformed officers grouped on a bridge near where the woman was last seen.
