Is Screw on Channel 4 based on a true story?

Screw is written by Bafta-nominated screenwriter Rob Williams.

The series is NOT based on a true story but it IS inspired by Rob's experience of working and volunteering in a prison.

Channel 4 said: "This series brings us a view of incarceration unlike any other.

"Through a vibrant and multi-layered cast of characters, Screw tackles contemporary stories head on – but always cut through with comedy, irreverence and heart."

The show is set in the fictional jail, Long Marsh prison.

Rob revealed that the drama was shot in Scotland, with most of the filming taking place in Glasgow.

Speaking about series two, Rob told Channel 4: "The serial element grows where, with series one, the story of the week was bigger, although we've absolutely tried to explore different aspects of prison life in each episode as well – things like the well-trodden care-to-prison pathway and romantic relationships in prison.

"The tone has shifted as a result. There is still humour there, but it's probably lower in the mix."

What is Screw about?

Screw is dark-humoured drama which focuses on the prison staff at Long Marsh men’s prison.

The drama tells the story of life in prison from the perceptive of the workers rather than the inmates.

The story follows the life of Rose Gill, a young trainee officer who is new to Long Marsh.

Leigh, chief officer, guides Rose through the ins and outs of being a prison officer.

Season two of Screw sees the officers and inmates face more suspicion and paranoia as rumours float that one convict is actually an undercover police officer.
