Is Long Marsh prison from Screw on Channel 4 real?

Screw is inspired by Bafta-nominated screenwriter Rob Williams' own real-life experience of working and volunteering in a prison.

However, despite the realistic nature of the jail, Long Marsh prison itself isn't real, and is a fictional facility.

But fans will be pleased to know that the show was filmed in a real life jail called Peterhead Prison.

Although not in use now, the facility - which was a specialist centre for sex offenders - operated from 1888 to 2013 and could hold around 400 prisoners.

However, most of the interior scenes were shot in a Scottish studio.

A three-storey prison set was built in Kelvin Hall in Glasgow for the scenes set inside the jail

Speaking about the replica set, Nina Sosanya who plays Leigh Henry in the drama told Channel 4: "It's a life-size replica of a prison wing, the sort that might have been built in the mid-19th century where it’s about the railings and the steel steps.

"Once you step through the gates, you're actually in this sort of living, breathing prison with 100 or so cells, most of which can open and lock.

"There are offices and pool tables, classrooms and medical stores.

"You'd be forgiven for thinking that the series is going to look claustrophobic or samey, but it's exactly the opposite because these three levels allow the camera to sweep from one place to another."

Can I visit Long Marsh prison from Screw?

As Long Marsh prison is fictional you can't visit it, but you can take a look at Peterhead Prison.

The jail is now a museum, so fans can tour what was once considered to be "Scotland's toughest prison".

This infamous building is located in Peterhead, Aberdeenshire and tickets cost up to £27 for a family pass.
