Tesco & Sainsbury's make big change to prices - & it could save customers money

TESCO and Sainsbury's have announced big changes to their prices this New Year and shoppers could save cash.

It comes as families are faced with soaring food and energy bills due to the cost of living crisis.

Last month food inflation also hit 16.4% as prices continue to skyrocket.

Tesco has revealed it is freezing the prices of more than a thousand everyday products until April 10.

The supermarket giant said the move will "help people budget when they need it most".

Tesco said the prices of everyday items including a 2.25kg bag of McCain Home Chips will remain at £4.30 until April this year.

The price of Heinz baked beans will be frozen at 65p and Listerine mouthwash will be just 99p.

Tesco customers will still be able to benefit from other deals in store, including Clubcard Prices and its Aldi Price match scheme.

This isn't the first time Tesco has locked in prices to help shoppers with rising costs.

Some of these have been extended again in this latest round of price freezes.

But, this time as well as branded products, prices have been locked on many own-brand staples too.

Meanwhile, Sainsbury's has also launched its next round of Aldi Price Match promises on "more products than ever before".

The latest campaign has 25% more products matched to Aldi than the Autumn campaign, with over 300 products in total and 150 fresh lines.

Sainsbury’s has also added new household staples such as nappies, cereal and canned soup to the campaign.

The move has seen its Little Ones Dry Fit Nappies reduced to £2.89 from £3.35.

Also, its JS whole chicken breast fillets (640g) now cost £4.18.

Some of the items have already been matched with Aldi prices but the major supermarket has also revealed new price cuts such as the nappies.

But it's important to remember that while supermarket price promises can seem like a good deal, you should always compare prices.

Websites such as trolley.co.uk allow you to compare the prices of particular items at retailers across the UK.

The news from Tesco and Sainsbury's comes as Morrisons announced earlier this week that it has slashed prices of around 130 items including bread, cheese and meat.

The supermarket lowered prices from January 2, to help shoppers battling against a cost of living crisis.

Asda also cut the prices of more than 100 items online and in-store to help customers with the rising cost of living.

How else can I save on my supermarket shop?

There are plenty of other ways to save on your supermarket shop.

You can try looking out for yellow or red stickers on products which show when they've been reduced.

If the food is fresh you'll have to eat it fast, or freeze it to have another time.

Sometimes even timing your shop to stock up just as items are discounted on the shelves can help you get the best bargains - lots of shoppers have said this is in the evening typically.

Making a list could save you some money too as you'll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.

Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.

That means going for "own" or "value" type products instead of "finest" or "luxury" lines.

Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes as well where you can get cheap prices if they're misshapen or imperfect.

For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.

Parents can get up to £442 in Healthy Start vouchers that they can use at the supermarket, on food and more for their children, for example.

Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support fund - so you can make your money go further with the extra support available.
