Son and Maddison star again as Spurs cruise back to Prem top spot

YOU can see why Tottenham fans are rubbing their eyes with complete disbelief each time they look at the Premier League table.

Two points clear after nine games. If they win at Crystal Palace on Friday night, the gap, maybe only for a day or so - will be five points.

What a mind-boggling turnaround from a year ago when after nine games, it was north London rivals Arsenal on top of the table and feeling pretty pleased with themselves.

Yet crucially, it is what has happened on the pitch here at White Hart Lane under Ange Postecoglou which has transformed this club beyond belief in super-quick time.

It took Mikel Arteta two-and-half years to turn Arsenal into title contenders. Postecoglou has waved his Aussie magic wand and managed it in a few months.

Not for the first time, it was the combo of Son Heung-Min and James Maddison which continued Spurs unbelievably-bright start.

The improvement of Son, the Premier League’s player of the month for September, has summed up the entire situation at Tottenham. He looks reborn and is playing with a smile on his face again.

He has now scored seven times this season, the same as Mo Salah and two behind Erling Haaland.

At the same stage last term, Son had scored in just one Premier League game and that was a hat-trick against Burnley.

And while his partner in crime Harry Kane is no longer around, Maddison is playing a fine supporting role.

Maddison scored his first goal at his new home and it will be the first of many, you can be sure of that.

For Fulham, it was a tough night. And you can see why they don’t like playing Spurs as it is now 14 defeats in 16 Premier League games.

It was a particularly bad night for defender Calvin Bassey who suffered a total shocker and was responsible for both Tottenham goals.

Ultimately, Postecoglou’s team should have won by more and at times ,they were guilty of being over-elaborate.

But after years of turgid football, Spurs fans are enjoying plenty of tippy-tappy stuff even if occasionally, they could be slightly more direct when inside the area.

Only the left leg of keeper Bernd Leno stopped Son from scoring in under two minutes and Micky van de Ven wasted a good chance and hooked a volley over the bar.

Yet after overcoming that torrid early spell, Fulham got a grip and only a cracking save from Spurs keeper Guglielmo Vicario stopped Joao Palhinha from scoring with a header.

Apart from injuries at the back, it is easy to see where Fulham’s main problem is up front. Bobby De Cordova-Reid is their top scorer on two goals.

Equally, that is the same number of goals as Richarlison has managed this term and it is easy to see why he continues to struggle and he wasted a few more chances last night.

When Maddison delivered a weak shot at Leno, you wondered whether, finally, this was going to be the game that Spurs suffered a little wobble.

Yet Son settled those nerves with a goal helped by some generous defending from Bassey who, at £19million, looks to be a lousy buy from Ajax.

His pass was cut out by Van de Den, Richarlison slipped the ball to Son and he danced around both Tim Ream and Bassey before hammering a shot past Leno from just inside the area.

Fulham manager Marco Silva brought on Raul Jimenez and Alex Iwobi at the break but it made no real difference because there was no stopping Spurs. Richarlison fired an effort high into the South Stand but thankfully, his team-mates are finishing their chances a bit better.

Incredibly, Bassey was punished for another sloppy pass with Hojbjerg making the interception. Maddison took just one touch to control a pass from and he slipped a shot beyond Leno.

With the game won, Postecoglou had the luxury of making his subs early and now, Spurs go to Palace in a short turnaround.

Although we are not even a quarter of the way through the season, Spurs fans are already dreaming - and you can hardly blame them.
