The country has made headlines for years on its stance about LGBTq+ issues and in 2020,the constitution was changed to explicitly ban gay marriage.

Now, anyone the state deems to be an LGBT activist could go to jail for being part of an 'extreme organisation'.

Victoria, 55, interviewed Nadya Tolokonnikova, a member of feminist protest group Pussy Riot, via video link about the latest developments.

At the end of their conversation, Nadya asked to make one more point to which Victoria said: "Go ahead."

Nadya then said: "I guess the point of my long speech was that Russian people are not homophobic.

"I spent some time in Russian jail and I was communicating with Russian prisoners, male prisoners and for them, it's a funny thing."

She then used a graphic and crude description of sex between two men and then added: "but it's not a reason to hate them."

Ever the professional, Victoria replied: "I'm so glad you made your point.

She then turned to Newsnight viewers and said: "If anyone's offended by the language, you know, I'm really sorry."

Sharing the clip on X - formerly Twitter - one viewer wrote: "Jawdropping comment on Newsnight."

Another added: "@nadyariot says something I never thought I would ever hear on #Newsnight."

A third tweeted: "Best line EVER by Pussy Riot's Nadya Tolokonnikova."

Newsnight airs on BBC Two and is available on BBC iPlayer.
