A LANCASHIRE police chief's cause of death has been revealed after he died suddenly aged just 50.

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Lawson, who took on a high-profile role in the search for Nicola Bulley, died at home on Sunday, the force said.

Mr Lawson led the search for missing mum Nicola in February this year, which ended when her body was found in the River Wyre.

The well-respected Assistant Chief Constable often appeared at press conferences, and also provided evidence to the Manchester Arena terror attack inquiry.

Initially, Lancashire Police said Mr Lawson's death was medical-related.

But it has now confirmed that the 50-year-old died from natural causes.

The force said: "Following the tragic death of Assistant Chief Constable Peter Lawson at the weekend, His Majesty’s senior coroner for Lancashire and Blackburn with Darwen has reviewed the circumstances.

"It has now been established that Peter died from natural causes and funeral arrangements will be made in due course.

"His Majesty’s senior coroner has confirmed there is no requirement for an inquest.

"Our deepest condolences once again go out to Peter’s family, and we will support them as much as we can.

"Our thoughts are with them and everyone who knew Peter. We want to respect their privacy and would ask that the public and media do so too.

"We will continue to offer support to all our staff and those who worked with Peter, as we mourn his loss."

Last month a review of the search for 45-year-old Nicola found that officers could have done more to protect evidence in the "golden hour" after she went missing.

The review also questioned the disclosure of Nicola's personal information by cops.
