A PRISTINE motor built in 1912 has sold for an eye-water amount at auction - making it the most expensive pre-WWI car ever.

The Simplex Torpedo Tourer went under the hammer and was snapped up for a whopping £4million - overtaking the previous record holder by about £500,000.

That made the car, a unique 1912 50HP 5 Passenger Torpedo Tourer, officially the most expensive pre-WWI car of all time.

A private collector was said to have been the top bidder - seeing them head home with the 111-year-old set of wheels.

Simplex was a US motor brand that only existed between 1906 and 1915.

And the last time a car from that manufacturer came to auction it was 2006.

Bidding started on the motor in Arizona in recent weeks.

This is Money reported had been estimated to sell for an eye-watering $2.5m and $3.5m USD - or about £2m-£2.9m.

But, it went for more than a million more.

The top bidder paid around $4.85m - which is around £4m.

Bonhams auctioneers said the Simplex had been in private ownership its entire life and had never spent a night outside.

It was also said to be a supreme example with matching chassis and engine numbers.

The car is one of the most sought-after from the brass era and it features a massive 9.8-litre, four-cylinder engine - which typified the generation.

The 50-horsepower model was the sportiest of all Simplexs and was introduced to the public with a then breathtaking price tag of $5,750, which works out at around £4,665.

That's the equivalent of more than £500,000 today.

The car overtook the top spot for the most expensive pre-WWI by about £500,000.

The record had been held since 2007 by a 1904 Rolls-Royce 10 hp Two-Seater, which was sold at a London auction.

That motor went for around £3.5m.

Ahead of the auction, Bonhams said: "Cars of this quality rarely come to public auction.

"It has been nearly 17 years since an original bodied Simplex has been offered publicly.

"This car is among the finest antique cars in America and the opportunity to acquire something of this calibre is truly special."

The Simplex wasn't the only car to break auction records this week.

A Bugatti Chiron Profilée sold for £8.7 million - taking it to the top spot as the most expensive new car EVER sold.
