IF you’re someone who gets gel nails done regularly, you may well have experienced what many have dubbed the “burning sensation.”

This is when your hands are under the UV lamp after they’ve been painted and your fingernails begin to tingle with sharp pains.

Now a beauty expert and nail technician has lifted the lid on why it occurs – and issued a warning about what to do if it happens to you when you’re next in the salon chair.

Lucie, who specialises in nails, as well as allergy awareness, explained that while many customers leave their hands under the lamp while experiencing the “burning”, it should never be ignored.

The beauty pro, who can be found on TikTok via her profile @leh.nailsbeauty, said: “Are your nails burning?!

“This burning sensation when you put your gel nails in the lamp is a heat spike.”

Continuing to delve into the science, she continued: “This is an exothermic reaction, so we are feeling heat from the chemical reaction that takes place when the bonds form (hardening the gel).”

Lucie then stressed the importance of acting fast.

She went on: “If you feel a heat spike, remove your hand. Wait a second or two and place it back in.”

She added: “Leaving the hand in can cause serious damage.”

Touching on the side effects this could have, she detailed how it could cause onycholysis, which is when the nails separate from the nail bed.

Lucie also shared how beauty fans should know that this is “not a good sign” and that while it’s common to feel this sensation every now and again, it should not be the norm.

She continued to say: “Your nails should not always be burning.

“Getting your nails done should be a positive, not painful experience.

“Heat spikes are a thing, but they shouldn’t be in pain all the time!”

After she shared the helpful word of advice, many of Lucie’s 10.6k followers were quick to thank her and said they’d have her message in their mind going forwards as they’d suffered this themselves..

One social media user wrote: “I just put up with it because I’m too scared to say anything.”

Another said: “I had this so bad once that my nail tech ended up soaking my fingers in cold water.”

While a third typed: “Holy hell, I thought it was because my nail therapist put some product on my skin.”
