YOUR nails might be a dead giveaway of your real age and it turns out loads of us have no idea why.

In the same way you take care of your the skin on your face everyday, you should also be looking after your nails and hands, according to the pros.

Beverley Fischer, who is the leading surgeon at The Advanced Centre for Plastic Surgery, told Express.co.uk that our hands age a lot quicker than other spots.

She said: "Hand skin loses fat and elasticity the older you become, which causes more translucent skin, leading to wrinkles."

With this in mind, the pro explained why taking care of your nails is so importnant.

"Compared to the rest of the body, hands are especially vulnerable to wrinkles," she said.

Signs of aging are sometimes obvious because of breaking and brittle nails, though this could also be down to other medial conditions, the expert explained.

The best way to combat ageing hands and nails is to always wear gloves when handling cleaning products and regularly use a good moisturising soap, as well as creams and oils.

You can also use a cuticle oil to turn back the clock and make your hands and nails appear younger, but the right nail colour can fool people into thinking you're loads younger.

One study even put this theory to the test and the results show a perfectly manicured nail makes you look younger.

The experts at TotalBeauty told Express.co.uk: "Subjects were asked to guess women's ages judging by photos of their hands alone; 49 percent of the subjects said women's hands looked younger when wearing nail polish."

The best colours to go for are more neutral shades for a timeless and classy look.

But according to Allure, if you're in doubt is red will always work well since it draws attention to your nails rather than signs of ageing on your hands.

Light pinks, nudes and earthy tones are also on trend at the moment and long fake nails are out.

Instead, shorter natural nails will be easier to keep looking pristine and look better as you age.

It might also be a good idea to avoid neon colours though, although they work in the same way as red shades they don't have the same classy appeal.
