A Cambridgeshire town's rather lopsided Christmas tree has been slated as "embarrassing" by bemused locals, while others insist on its resemblance to Italy's famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Residents of March, Cambridgeshire haven't held back from sharing their opinions about the 30ft tree – or blaming the volunteers responsible for its installation. One resident took to Facebook to comment: "This looks like it's been plonked down without too much care! I honestly don't like to moan and I am quite aware trees grow in different shapes and sizes – but just feel like if a job is worth doing it should be done properly".

Another agreed, saying it looked "ridiculous", while a third added: "It doesn't look like a wonky tree, it looks like it's been put up wrong.

"Why does it need to go in that position? Those poor people who are trying to maintain a business in the exchange building.

"It doesn't even look safe." Speaking to the BBC, 88 year-old resident Anne Conroy said she also had safety concerns. "It's certainly leaning, it's dangerous," she said.

Volunteers from the March Christmas Lights Committee conceded reception was "mixed" and that they hadn't managed to inspect the tree in person before making the purchase. However, they insisted it was "structurally sound" and that it was "as straight as it's gonna be".

And the town clerk at March Town Council, Sarah Lemmon, took aim at the residents' lack of festive cheer: "It is very disappointing that each year sees a small (but very vocal) minority surface, which seems hell-bent on spreading negativity, finding fault, levelling criticism, and generally trying to kill the spirit of Christmas. Yes, it is a little bit wonky.

"But it is a beautiful tree that will be decorated this weekend and, let's face it, Pisa's famous leaning tower is celebrated and adored the world-over," she added.
