The opening moments saw her being called to a local reservoir which had been drained, and human remains had been found.

Catherine immediately recognised who it was, and before long, her longtime foe Tommy Lee Royce was being taken from his prison cell to a police station to be questioned about his involvement in the murder.

While Tommy - played by James Norton - didn't give the coppers the name they had hoped for, Catherine was back out on the beat visiting one of grandson Ryan's teacher's homes.

The male teacher had called the police after finding his wife with dodgy prescription drugs, but when Catherine arrived, she immediately clocked the bruises all over the wife's arms.

During a chat with her sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) later, Catherine recounted how she tried to get the wife to open up about what her husband had done to her, before explaining what constitutes coercive control.

In a further twist, the wife was then seen being visited by her neighbour, a pharmacist, who had given her the meds, and she offered him sex in return.

But the pharmacist had bigger problems on his hands as he was cornered in his pharmacy by local drug dealers who demanded he keep dealing and handing over the profits to them, or they would hurt his two young children.

Meanwhile, Catherine got a nasty shock from her boss when he informed her that he'd heard on the grapevine that Ryan was visiting his dad Tommy in prison with the help of a mystery man and woman.

Catherine refused to believe him, but was shocked to learn her nemesis had been moved to Sheffield prison relatively recently, and that it could be possible for her grandson to have gone behind her back.

Her boss said he would try and find out more, and in the final moments, he arrived at her office with bad news, confirming her fears that Ryan had been visiting Tommy, but viewers will have to wait and see who has been taking him.

With past dramas set to resurface as well as new problems to solve, viewers couldn't wait to discuss the show's return on Twitter.

One wrote: "#happyvalley is back and it's still 10/10."
