CALL The Midwife fans have been left fearing that a popular character could be about to depart the show as the series kicked off its brand new series with a heartbreaking storyline.

The long-running BBC One drama returned for the new year with the gang all back together as they were joined by new recruit, Sister Veronica, who made a questionable first impression on the ladies.

As the brand new series got underway, Nurse Robinson, played by Leonie Elliott, is missing Jamaica as she gets sent photos of her sister's wedding whom she has not seen for years.

She tells her husband Cyrill how it makes her sad to think about her life in Jamaica and how she is upset she has never met her sister's husband and how her family have never met Cyrill.

Despite her emotions and her wobble, Lucille attempts to pick herself back up after an off-day and get back to her nursing job at hand and after some encouragement from her husband and fellow nurses.

However, an announcement over the radio sends shockwaves through London when the characters all hear politician Enoch Powell's disturbing Rivers of Blood speech which strongly criticised immigration from Commonwealth countries and the proposes Race Relations Act.

Both Lucille and Cyrill are left feeling shocked by the announcement as hostility begins to grow around Britain and amongst their neighbours.

A pregnant patient, Greta Pickard, sees her husband begin a protest against immigration as he insists that immigrants are taking the 'dockers jobs' as they create placards and banners denouncing immigration.

Lucille faces further heartbreak when she offers to help deliver Greta's baby, unaware of her husband's activities, as she has 'always liked her' and wants to help.

However as Great is left to give birth on a ward as opposed to the delivery room as Mrs Patel requires it more, she begins to get annoyed and suggests that Mrs Patel has 'barged the queue' even though 'she does not belong here'.

Lucille attempts to keep her composure around Greta as she prepares to give birth.

Great tells Lucille: "Enoch Powell was right!"

She continued: "The complication is immigrants, coming here taking all the things that other people have paid for and taking all the jobs.

"British people were born here, we should come first, they should all go home!"

She quickly added: "Of course I don't mean you Nurse!"

Frustrated and upset at yet another incident, Lucille walks out and refuses to help Greta deliver her baby and she storms out of the medical centre.

She later breaks down at home and admits she just wants 'to go home' to Jamaica amid the unrest in the UK.

Cyrill tells her to take sick leave so she can get over her 'nerves' and gain her confidence back as she heartbreakingly admits: "I'm not sick, I'm sad."

It has prompted fear among fans that she could be on her way out of the BBC drama.

One fan wrote: "Lucille deserves better, i am very anxious about the way her storyline is going."

Another added: "If Lucille leaves series i’ll be so sad, she can’t go."

A third said: "We can't lose Lucille. I've loved her since she arrived. I hope the rest of the new series of #CallTheMidwife brings her some happiness."

It remains to be seen just what Lucille will do next and if she will head back to Jamaica.
