Mykhaylo Mudryk sent a classy message to Kieran Trippier after the Newcastle defender endured a nightmare game in the defeat by Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Trippier made a dreadful mistake to hand Chelsea a late equaliser before missing his penalty in the shoot-out as Newcastle were knocked out of the Carabao Cup. Newcastle appeared set for the semi-finals thanks to Callum Wilson ’s early goal before the normally reliable Trippier imploded.

The Magpies right-back accidentally cushioned a header down for Mudryk to slot into the bottom corner in the 92nd minute and send it to penalties. Trippier put his effort wide, with Djorde Petrovic then saving Matt Ritchie’s spot-kick to win it 4-2 on penalties after every Chelsea taker, including Mudryk, found the net.

Mudryk was delighted with his impact, but clearly felt for Trippier, who pulled his shirt over his head after placing his effort wide. Taking to Instagram, Mudryk wrote: “Kieran, just wanna say to you, stay strong sometimes the s*** happens, but I think you are strong footballer no matter what @ktrippier2”.

Trippier has been fantastic for Newcastle this season, chipping in with eight assists in 24 appearances across all competitions. But he struggled in the recent defeat to Everton and was certainly culpable for Newcastle’s exit from the Carabao Cup, which came just six days after they were knocked out of Europe by AC Milan.

He appeared to be caught in two minds whether to control or head Malo Gusto’s bouncing cross back to Martin Dubravka in goal. All he succeeded in doing was setting up the onrushing Mudryk to place a finish past Dubravka and into the bottom corner.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe backed his player after the game. Asked how Trippier was feeling, Howe said: "I'm sure he doesn't feel fantastic because he prides himself on his technical excellence and the quality of his defensive work. He's been a transformative signing for us and has glued the dressing room together. He's been the heartbeat of our performances."

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino was happy with the way his side kept going. “I am so pleased and the players deserve some credit. After conceding the way we did, we didn't deserve to concede, it can affect any team,” he said.

“We reacted really well and dominated the game against a very good team like Newcastle. Then we keep pushing in the second half and make some changes and of course, try to provide the team with some impact. The most important in football is to believe until the end and that was possible because we keep believing and then always we know penalties are a lottery.

“Of course, talent and quality. Of course, so pleased because our objective before the game was to go through to the semi-final. We are in the semi-final and now we need to move on and wait tomorrow and then be focused and be ready for the next Premier League game.”
