On the latest episode of the show, Sir David Attenborough told viewers about a group of European common frogs that were in search of mates in the snowy Alps.

It prompted some risky scenes between the frogs as one male was successful and found a mate.

However, the cameras continued to roll with the moments between the two frogs shown in all its glory.

Viewers were left racing to X - formerly Twitter - as they shared their surprise at the X-rated 'pornographic' scenes.

One social media user commented in shock: "S******g frogs on the TV on a Sunday."

Another user penned: "Nothing like some frog porn on a Sunday evening #PlanetEarthIII #PlanetEarth3."

A third viewer echoed: "Frogs getting frisky wasn’t on my bingo card today! #PlanetEarth3 #davidattenborough."

As another predicted the scenes could turn into an "orgy", writing: "Gonna be another frog orgy isn’t it."

Before a fifth joked: "Mating frogs on #PlanetEarth3 – still a better love story than Twilight."

Planet Earth 3 returned to Sunday nights on BBC One last month.

It has so far aired six episodes exploring and discovering all different areas and aspects of wildlife across the globe.

Earlier this month, fans were left devastated when two of the animals featured on the show were confirmed to have died after the cameras stopped rolling.

Speaking at the time, Kiri Cashell, a producer and director working on the show, said of the tragic deaths: “The death of our maned wolf, Nhorinha, and her puppies is truly heart-breaking.

“Sadly since filming ended, we have discovered that the mother and two of her puppies fell into drainage ditches which are used to feed the crops of neighbouring farmland.

"Unable to escape, the wolves drowned.”
