Am I the only person who can't stand woke culture?

DEAR DEIDRE: At work, I feel like I’m the only one who hates all of this “woke” culture even though, from what I’ve been told, most people share my feelings and don’t take offence.

I am a 54-year-old man. Many of my colleagues are in their late 20s to early 30s.

I have always thought politics shouldn’t be discussed at work yet people in my team have always bashed Brexit, Trump and JK Rowling.

They act as if the only acceptable views are their own. Anything else is either racist, fascist or immoral.

One said to me, when I dared to air a different impression, that not everyone is entitled to their opinion, especially when it’s wrong.

My views aren’t extreme but sometimes my co-workers make me feel as though they are not willing to consider ideas that are new or different to their own.

I feel victimised.

DEIDRE SAYS: Having different opinions doesn’t mean we have to hold different values and it’s key that we all share respect.

Viewpoints are becoming increasingly polarised and social media encourages extreme opinions, but we all deserve to feel comfortable in the workplace.

If your colleagues persist, ask them to stop bringing up contentious subjects or at least making it personal.

My support pack, Standing Up For Yourself, should help you to do this without causing an argument.
