The bully eventually loses its grip as Josh manages to get Ralph into his arms and off the ground.
He runs for a front door but the dog gives chase before both smash into a brick wall.
Josh manages to dart round the attacking hound and makes it through a door as a lady in pyjamas grabs the mutt by the collar and drags it off.
Josh thought Ralph was "already dead" when he jumped on top of him.
Recalling Tuesday afternoon's horror, he told MailOnline: "He just went limp in my arms.

"My little one-year-old boy wouldn't know what to do without him. He's his best mate."
Ralph miraculously survived the attack while Josh only sustained cuts and bruises.
From December 31 Xl Bullies must be microchipped, muzzled and kept on a lead in public and it will be illegal to breed, sell or abandon them.
Advertising, gifting and exchanging the mutts will also be outlawed and they must be kept in a secure place to prevent escape, the Government says.
Owners have been reminded that they can ask a vet to euthanize their pets and claim £200 compensation.
