The couples two daughters had moved away after university and so they had decided to build the property so there was room for Mike's parents Jean and Robin, and Sarah's mother Sylvia.

Mike and Sarah told host Kevin McCloud they had originally bought the small farm holding several years earlier for £250,000.

They had taken on a flock of sheep at the same time and now they wanted to build the home on the land.

They told Kevin they were looking at an estimated £900,000 to build their dream home, taking the total to nearly £1.2 million.

However, Grand Designs viewers - who hadn't seen the episode the first time around when it aired in September last year - were not impressed by the end result.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: "Mmm. A house that looks like a business park. Lovely."

Another added: "It's a bit office like".

A third tweeted: "I want a house that looks like a Supermax prison."

A fellow viewer moaned: "Is this the one where you're upstairs, you look outside and instead of seeing the countryside you look at the granny extension roof. Stupid design."

Thankfully for the couple, Kevin didn't agree, as he said: "It is a beautiful design."
