Liverpool suffer Szoboszlai injury blow as Klopp hails "sensational" display

Jurgen Klopp is keeping his fingers crossed over the fitness of Dominik Szobozlai after the midfielder limped off against Newcastle.

The Reds overcame Eddie Howe's side 4-2 at Anfield on Monday evening to extend their lead at the top of the table to three points. Mo Salah scored twice, while Cody Gakpo and Curtis Jones both managed to get on the scoresheet.

It wasn't all good news for Liverpool though as Hungarian playmaker Szoboszlai was substituted with just over an hour played for Ryan Gravenberch. While Klopp was left delighted with his side's showing, he does have concern over his midfielder's fitness following his withdrawal.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the Reds' latest victory, the German said: "It was a sensational game from my team. We started extremely lively. Everyone saw Dubravka or we ourselves made sure the score didn't get too clear.

"Super game. I loved so many aspects of the game bar the goals we conceded. Unbelievable game. Unbelievable atmosphere. Counter-pressing wise it was for football schools. They have to watch that, take it and keep it. It was everything good.

"The show must go on. We now have five or six days so three training days. It will change the world from a freshness point of view. Dominik Szoboszlai with a hamstring, we hope not too serious. Other players felt it as well. It's super intense. But there's no alternative if you want to win football games."

Klopp will certainly be hoping that Szoboszlai is not out for too long given the upcoming strain on Liverpool's squad. Stefan Bajcetic and Thiago Alcantara are among the midfielders currently recovering from injury.

Their options are set to dwindle even more over the coming weeks with Wataru Endo due to depart for the Asia Cup, while matchwinner against Newcastle Salah is set to travel for the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

Joel Matip's season is likely over after his long-term knee injury. Andrew Robertson is also not expected to return until at least February.

Liverpool's packed fixture schedule continues over the next few weeks in a clutch of competitions. The Reds take on title rivals Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup next weekend before their League Cup semi-final first leg vs Fulham. Their next Premier League assignment sees them travel to the south coast for a clash with Bournemouth.
