The Washington Commanders are set to announce Dan Quinn as their new head coach.

Washington's decision leaves Bill Belichick without a team for 2024. The Commanders had been eyeing Ben Johnson, who's had an impressive run with the Detroit Lions, but he decided to stay put as their offensive coordinator.

Belichick, the legendary New England Patriots coach, was linked to the Commanders job but now seems out of options for 2024, as the Seattle Seahawks have hired Mike Macdonald.

After interviewing twice for the Atlanta Falcons job and being passed over for Raheem Morris, Belichick, 71, might take a break from coaching or possibly take on a defensive coordinator role. He ended his 24-year stint with the Patriots earlier this year and is rumoured to be eyeing a return as a head coach in 2025.

Quinn will join the Commanders after the franchise had been heavily linked with Johnson. Just as the team were about to jet off to interview him, Johnson brutally rejected them, hinting he didn't believe he could win a Super Bowl with the team.

Quinn is joining the team after a five-year stint as head coach for the Atlanta Falcons, where he led the team to the Super Bowl in 2017. Unfortunately, they lost to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, and Quinn was let go in 2020.

Since then, Quinn has made a name for himself as one of the top defensive coordinators in the NFL with the Cowboys. He's been linked with several head coaching positions, including the Seahawks, before signing up with the Commanders.

Belichick's Patriots exit was announced last month. He said: "For me, this is a day of gratitude and celebration... We had a vision of building a winner, a championship football team, here and it exceeded my wildest dreams and expectations. I will always have those great memories and will carry those for the rest of my life."

Belichick won six Super Bowls with the Patriots, having achieved the big game nine times during his time in New England. Franchise owner Robert Kraft added: "The man standing to my left brought the leadership and coaching skills that were needed to make this unprecedented success possible.

"He is the greatest coach of all time, which makes this decision to part ways so hard. This is a move we mutually agreed was needed at this time. What Bill achieved with us will never be replicated."
