Workers at the luxury retreat were besides themselves when the Maggie May singer rewarded their hard work with a huge gratuity.

The kindhearted crooner – whose new album Swing Fever, with Jools Holland, is released on February 23, said: “I’ve been lucky enough to stay in some of the top hotels in the world and the service at Gleneagles is second to none.

“The staff do a terrific job at a very hectic time of the year and deserve every penny. It’s Scottish hospitality at its very best.”

On his tip, Sir Rod joked: “I advised the boys and girls at Gleneagles to invest the money wisely – stick the lot on Scotland to win the Euros.”

The music legend gave fans a glimpse into his stay at the high class resort in Auchterarder, Perthshire, by posting a photo of himself and his boys - all donning traditional Scottish dress - alongside a glamourous-looking Penny to Instagram, which he captioned: “A dedication to my wonderful Scottish father.”

The family also cheered Celtic to a 2-1 win over Rangers in the Old Firm derby on December 30. Penny posted a picture of herself, Sir Rod and Alastair toasting the victory with cocktails from the hotel’s American Bar. She wrote: “Celebrating 2-1 win to Celtic.”

Gleneagles was recently named the world’s best hotel for hospitality and boasts 11 different restaurants and bars, including the only two-star Michelin restaurant in Scotland.

The resort is popular with celebrities, with famous diners and guests including Queen Elizabeth II, John Travolta and Sir Sean Connery.
