Prince Harry has revealed the cosy nicknames he and his brother Prince William have for one another in his controversial new book Spare .

A remarkable extract from a leaked copy of the memoir, ahead of its official release date on Tuesday, revealed a physical encounter between the pair.

The Duke of Sussex claims his brother, now the Prince of Wales, grabbed him by the collar, knocked him to the floor and injured his back as he landed on a dog ball which smashed as he fell on it.

During the exchange, Harry calls William by the nickname 'Willy', writing that he gave his brother a glass of water and said: “Willy, I can’t speak to you when you’re like this.”

Later on, the Guardian reports he goes on to describe Prince William leaving when Harry reveals the nickname his brother uses for him - Harold.

Prince Harry's real name is rarely used and his surname even less so; Prince Henry Charles Albert David, Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton, Baron Kilkeel, formerly Prince Harry of Wales.

When Harry served in the army, he was known as Harry Wales, and even gave his son a middle name after himself; Harry's son - Harrison.

And the official statement announcing his engagement to Meghan read: "His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales and Ms Meghan Markle Are Engaged to Be Married."

The book - Spare - has been ghost-written by JR Moehringer, known for his expertise in strained father-son relationships.

Published by Penguin Random House, it has been available for pre-order since October and reached the number one spot on Amazon both in the US and UK.

It is set to be one of the biggest books of 2023 with the audiobook version being read by Harry himself.

The book's back cover reads: "It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow - and horror.

"As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling - and how their lives would play out from that point on.

"For Harry, this is that story at last.

"With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief.

" Prince Harry wishes to support British charities with donations from his proceeds from Spare.

"The Duke of Sussex has donated $1,500,000 to Sentebale, an organisation he founded with Prince Seeiso in their mothers' legacies, which supports vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana affected by HIV/AIDS.

"Prince Harry will also donate to the non-profit organisation WellChild in the amount of £300,000.

"WellChild, which he has been Royal patron of for fifteen years, makes it possible for children and young people with complex health needs to be cared for at home instead of hospital, wherever possible."
