Singer Sam Smith cut a fashionable display during a recent visit to New York with partner and fashion designer Christian Cowan.
The 31 year old star, who is internationally known for hits including Stay With Me, sported a graffiti style blue skirt and they teamed their look with a grey blazer, leather boots and a small bag across their chest. But it wasn't just their choice of outfit that drew attention from onlookers, so too did their romantic embrace with their partner of a year.
The couple stepped out together on the streets of New York and shared a tender kiss with their arms around each other. Christian however, choice a more conservative look in all black. It's believed that Sam and Christian started dating back in January last year and the following month, on Valentine's Day that year, Sam attended Christian's runway show during New York fashion week.
And once again, they donned another eye-catching outfit in a red jumpsuit with matching gloves and platform heels. They completed their look in a shimmering silver coat. And all of their outfits were designed by Christian. Sam's relationship with the designer comes after their romance with 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn and prior to that, they were linked to TV star Charlie King and soap actor Andy Newton Lee.
Speaking about why they don't worry about the gender of a person when falling in love, they told The Sun: "I've never really kind of played by the rule book. I love people, and whoever I fall for, that's who I fall for. I don't know who that's going to be. Now I don't know what gender they will be, to be quite honest, and that's a freeing thing - to not be limited to one category of person. I just fall in love with whoever I fall in love with."
Two huge pop stars will perform smash hit at Brit Awards next monthAnd discussing their own journey with not identifying as a specific gender, they told GQ UK: "That’s never really been me. I’ve always felt queer. I’ve always felt non-binary trans. My whole life. And it wasn’t until I had to sit in interviews every day and tell people my story again and again and again that I realised this narrative that was being created was only a small fraction of who I was."
In April last year, Sam created a heated debate online following another controversial performance. The singer kicked off their Gloria tour in style with a number of risque performances while on stage. But while Sam's fans were thrilled by their performance, critics shared a completely different sentiment - accusing them of giving "satanic" and "sexualised" performances.
Sam, who used the pronouns they/them donned a number of looks with red devil horns, sheer veils, wire crowns, nipple tassels and fishnets. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one person wrote: "[They're] taking entertainment to extreme levels! When you have the voice, I don't understand the need to sexualise a performance like that." Another wrote: "The rest of us don't want satanic erotica." A third user added: "This is vulgar and satanic."
